Beyond Search: How AI is Rewriting the Rules for Local Businesses
By: Jessica Wallace - Refined Media 716
We’ve been talking about this more and more lately with customers, business owners, and even friends — and the conversation usually starts with:
“What do you know about AI?”
Before we get too deep into it, you should know this:
AI has been around for a very long time. In fact, the concept dates back to the 1950s with mathematician Alan Turing who asked the question that started it all “Can machines think?”. In 1956 the actual name Artificial Intelligence was born from John McCarthy. In the 1960’s the first chatbots, robots, and rule based logic made its way into the world with the help from George Devol and Joseph Engelberger at General Motors who deployed Unimate to execute dangerous tasks involving hot die-cast metal and spot welding and an inland fisher guide plant in New Jersey.
Without giving you the full history lesson I’m sure you can see where I’m going. It’s been around for a long time. Approximately 70 years!
So now when you dive into “AI” in today’s world… think about how algorithms on social media work, how insurance rating platforms calculate quotes, how Netflix recommends shows, or really anything digital that’s processing information without direct human calculation.
In today’s world automated intelligence is getting smarter, faster, and more integrated into everyday life.
And listen — we’ll probably be the last people to tell you to “just keep up with technology,” because realistically, most of us, especially business owners, who, from known experience, are already juggling enough. Between staffing, operations, customers, bills, and trying to have a life outside of work… There's only so much bandwidth left.
This conversation is less about chasing every new tech trend and more about understanding how these systems are already affecting your business visibility online.
For Businesses: This Part Matters
AI cannot replace the trust your customers have in you. No matter how advanced the tools get, people still want connection, presence, personality, experience, and authenticity. Your customers still want to know who they’re buying from.
And honestly? You can usually tell when something is over-automated.
A caption generated in five seconds might technically “work,” but if your brand has no voice, no story, no perspective, people feel that too.
Technology can speed things up but it cannot replace the human touch. And it certainly cannot replace trust.
Now this is where things get interesting… The digital world has evolved dramatically.
Almost every major platform you can think of now has some level of AI embedded into it. Google. Facebook. Instagram. TikTok. Search engines. Ad platforms. Shopping platforms. Even customer service systems.
These systems are constantly pulling information to help users get faster, more accurate answers.
So naturally, the next question becomes:
Where Is AI Pulling Information From?
Pretty much everywhere.
Your website.
Your Google Business profile.
Your reviews.
Your social media content.
Your photos.
Your videos.
Your click behavior.
Your search history.
Your metadata.
Your consistency online.
Yes — even what people are searching plays a role.
Which means your digital presence now matters beyond just “looking good” and "functioning"
It needs to clearly explain:
what your business does
who you serve
where you serve
why people trust you
and why someone should choose you over the next option
And honestly? If your online presence is confusing, outdated, inconsistent, or unclear, these systems struggle to understand your business correctly.
There’s also another side of this conversation people are starting to ask more questions about too — the environmental impact.
AI doesn’t just magically exist “in the cloud.” It runs through enormous data centers requiring electricity, cooling systems, water, infrastructure, and physical hardware operating around the clock.
The technology is evolving quickly and so is the conversation surrounding its long-term impact.
Which is why we believe businesses should use these tools intentionally, not obsessively.
Because truthfully? We don’t think AI should replace businesses. We think it should support them.
The businesses standing out right now are not necessarily the loudest businesses online. They’re usually the clearest. The most human. The most trusted. The businesses that still feel like there are real people behind them.
Our take, we truly believe that balance is going to matter a lot moving forward.
